With a life steeped in entrepreneurial spirit, Matt has experienced every part of the business owner’s journey. Starting at the age of 12 in the family camping shop, he learned at the feet of his father, the master salesman, storyteller, and conversationalist. He eventually developed into the sales manager of their company and steered them towards a flourishing e-commerce business, after closing their physical store. He built, grew, and sunsetted his own painting company through university, before joining Shopify and becoming their youngest Support Team Lead. This varied wealth of experience has driven Matt to help others avoid the many pitfalls in the journey of an entrepreneur.

Beyond his varied history, what really fuels Matt is his love of connection. His life motto is credited to Jeff Tweedy of Wilco, “A good day is one where I create more than I destroy.” So, you can see why he relates so much to the BTA Value of “Genuinely Care About People.” Matt sees our members starting upon a Joseph Campbell-esque Hero’s Journey, ultimately culminating in financial and lifestyle freedom. He feels that being a part of that journey and supporting our members through the ups and downs, to help achieve those goals is a great privilege that he doesn’t take for granted. With his trades experience, technical skills, and empathetic soul, Matt is the perfect person to guide and support our community.

When he is out enjoying life, you’ll find Matt, his fiancée and their dog appreciating the glory of the natural world, via hiking, kayaking, climbing, and any other means they can find. If not in the mountains, he’ll often be found reading, playing board games, and taking walks around their historic neighbourhood. No matter where he is, he lives a life of gratitude and positivity and helps those around him do the same.
