Dan Smutylo’s career journey will resonate deeply with BTA members – he has lived (and continues to live) the BTA dream. Dan has gone from being a BTA member (twice) to being able to step out of the day-to-day of running his business and free up time to focus on new passions… and lucky for us, that means joining BTA as an Assessment Specialist! After working his way up the family signage business, Dan decided to branch out to start up his own business, Simple Sign, with his high school friend Tyson, and was able to automate the company and licence Simple Sign to area development investors.

Having experienced the challenges of working in a family business, starting a business from scratch and eventually licensing the company, Dan is excited to now help others on their entrepreneurial journey. His spirit and passion is infectious. He gets that an entrepreneur’s life can be lonely, and he wants to change that. Dan applied for the position of Assessment Specialist after being asked to share the job advert with his network – but it spoke to him. He knew first-hand the growth that can be had with BTA, and he wanted to help others succeed just as he did. Who better to take you on your BTA journey than someone who has experienced it first hand, twice!

That work-life balance we talk about, Dan has it dialled in. His philosophy is to stack good days on good days. In his spare time you are likely to find him with his wife Laura, three young daughters, Natalie, Julia, and Kate, and a group of friends sat around a fire, playing guitar, at a beautiful camp spot in B.C. Either that, or playing golf, hockey, dirt biking, entertaining, or just taking in life.
